14/12/10Cancun: towards a "whole world" solution?
At the climate change negotiations in Cancun, Ireland was at the centre of a process aimed at finding innovative solutions to the global climate problem. Details of the project were presented at a side-event organised by Ireland in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Programme and World Resources Institute. As governments struggled to find a satisfactory solution, this new initiative proposes a parallel evaluation of the different climate change scenarios based on a 'whole world' perspective. Touteleurope spoke to Richard Douthwaite, an economist and representative of the Irish thinktank Feasta which is at the origin of this ambitious project.

After a particularly decisive European Council meeting on the functioning of the European Union, the institutions seem to be taking a break. With the exceptions of a communication from Viviane Reding on data protection in the European Union, a directive proposal on management of radioactive waste and a forum on citizens’ advice services, there are not many big European events in the week of November 1st to 7th.

Jerzy Buzek’s election as President of the European Parliament, the first deputy from an Eastern Member State to hold this position, was hailed as historic, particularly, in the context of the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the end of communism. However, looking back over the first half of his mandate, it is obvious that times were difficult for the European Union a year ago: the future of the Lisbon Treaty was uncertain and the economic crisis was deepening. Poland went to the polls on 4th July for the final round of the presidential election brought about by the death of President Lech Kaczyński in the tragic air accident in Smolensk. In an election campaign overshadowed by this sad events, the moderate candidate Bronisław Komorowski of Civic Platform, defeated Jarosław Kaczyński, candidate of Law and Justice party. Upon taking up office Mr Komorowski resigned from his party the Civic Platform in order to be the 'President of all Poles'. Piotr Maciej Kaczynski researcher at the Centre for European Policy Studies in Brussels explains the significance of Komorowski's election and the policy changes that we can expect during his mandate.

18/06/10Michael Cashman: Strong EU leadership needed to achieve MDGs
Ten years ago, world leaders agreed to act to eradicate world poverty by 2015, setting targets in eight priority MDG fields, such as reducing poverty and hunger by 50%, full primary education and eliminating gender disparity and health-related issues. With only 5 years to go before the targets have to be met, MEPs fear that the EU will not be able to keep its development commitments. During the plenary session of the European Parliament this week, Michael Cashman, rapporteur for the Development committee, urged the EU show greater leadership on this issue by reaching its target of 0.7%.
