Toute l'Europe is launching the 'Tweet Your MEP' website to connect citizens to their MEPs

Toute l'Europe is launching a new website on September 22 : 'Tweet your MEP'. Its goal is to enable European Internet users, especially young people, to communicate with their MEPs in an easy, immediate, direct and transparent way.

In setting up the Tweet your MEP website, Toute l'Europe wants to organise and facilitate interaction between Internet users and MEPs... How ? By using Twitter technology to send short messages (140 characters max.), called “tweets”, via Internet or text messages for free. Twitter is very simple to use and registration on the site only takes a few minutes.

'Tweet your MEP' : a tool for European dialogue

With Tweet your MEP, MEPs will have an opportunity to inform citizens easily about the work they are doing on their behalf. Equally citizens will be able to ask a question, share their opinion or express their support for the action being taken by their MEPs.

Covering all 27 Member States, Tweet your MEP will be available in four languages - English, French, German and Dutch, before being extended in the near future.

How will the 'Tweet your MEP' website work ?

capture page d'accueil de TYMEP1. The home page of the Tweet Your MEP site will enable the Internet user to identify the MEP via geographic and thematic criteria that is either by country or by policy area. The policy areas will correspond to the parliamentary committees.

2. Once the person has selected either a country or a theme on the home page they will arrive at the second level where they can select the MEP or MEPs to whom they would like to send their message. A photo and brief description of the MEP will appear and information about the latest messages that have been sent to them.

3. The person can type their message and send it to the MEP. If the person doesn't have a twitter account the website will help them to create an account in one step. They simply need to create a username and password. A message will inform the person that their message has been sent.

'Tweet Your MEP' will be launched in September 2010

Two events are scheduled :

  • On September 14, in Brussels : Preview of the website 'Tweet Your MEP', during a conference on "Citizens' consultation in the light of the Lisbon Treaty", at the European Policy Center in Brussels, with the King Baudouin Foundation, a partner of this project.

  • On September 22, in Strasbourg : Official launch of the website, live from the European Parliament.
